Getting started

Tips for better AI-generated questions

Learn how to generate better quality AI questions with Quizgecko.Tips on text length, modes, and using Custom Instructions for accuracy.

Updated Jan 22, 2026

You’ll get better quizzes, flashcards, and study materials when you give the AI enough context and a clear target.

The golden rule: more content = better results

The AI can only work with what you give it. More relevant content usually means more accurate, less repetitive questions.

Quick tips

  • Include enough focused source material to cover the ideas you want tested
  • Very short inputs often lead to vague or repetitive questions
  • Keep Question count on Auto (default) so the AI matches the number of questions to your content length

Choose the right input method

Pick the format that best matches your source material:

  • Text / Paste Best for notes, textbook excerpts, lecture summaries, or anything you can copy and paste.
  • URL Great for articles, blog posts, and online resources. Quizgecko will extract and use the page content.
  • File upload (PDFs and documents) Ideal for lecture slides, textbooks, and study guides. Your upload screen shows the current file allowance for your account. See the plans page for the current plan comparison.
  • Subject / Topic Enter a topic (e.g., Photosynthesis or World War II) and the AI generates questions from general knowledge. Best when you don’t have a specific source.
  • YouTube Paste a YouTube link and the AI will use the transcript to generate questions.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Don’t try to force lots of questions from very little content. You’ll usually get repeats or filler.
  • Don’t use single-sentence inputs unless you only want a few high-level questions.
  • Do use focused, relevant content. A clean excerpt on one topic beats scattered notes across five topics.

If your material covers multiple units, split it and generate in smaller chunks. You’ll get cleaner coverage and fewer duplicates.

Use Custom Instructions for more control

In Extra Details, add Custom Instructions to steer the output.

What to include

  • Focus areas: “Focus on dates and key figures”
  • Difficulty: “Beginner level” or “Advanced clinical scenario questions”
  • Style: “Case-study format” or “Short-answer questions”
  • Exam format: “Align with USMLE Step 1 style”

Example (nursing exam) “Focus on pharmacology interactions and patient safety. Use NCLEX-style questions.”

Quick checklist

  • Provide enough focused material to cover the questions you want
  • Use Auto question count
  • Match the input type to your source
  • Add Custom Instructions when you want a specific style or level
